Age & Cancer

Older people 'miss skin cancer signs'

Related stories

Older people are less likely to get skin changes checked by a doctor, leading to a steep rise in cancer deaths, say researchers.
The East of England Cancer Registry reports that deaths from melanoma among the over 65s have tripled in the past 30 years.
The elderly are more likely to be diagnosed when the cancer has spread.
Cancer Research UK says pensioners should keep a close eye on moles and report suspicious changes to GPs.
Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, and is linked to cumulative sun exposure over a lifetime.
This means that the over-65s are more likely to develop the disease in the first place.
Overlooked However, unlike younger people, the registry data reveals that the classic signs of a cancerous mole are being overlooked among a host of other changes to older skin.
This means that by the time the mole cannot be ignored, the cancer is likely to be at a more advanced stage, making it far harder to treat.
Dr Jem Rashbass, the director of the East of England Cancer Registry, which collates data on cancer to identify trends among the population, said: "Although there have been some improvements in the number of over 65s being diagnosed with melanoma at a late stage, the figures suggest that more needs to be done to raise awareness about skin cancer among this generally retired population."
The registry data revealed that, for every year since 1997, significantly more elderly people have been diagnosed with late-stage melanoma compared with under-65s.
While the death rate among older people rose from four deaths per 100,000 people in 1979 to 11.4 per 100,000 in 2008, the death rate for people aged between 15 and 64 has remained stable.
Sara Hiom, from Cancer Research UK, said: "Melanoma is a largely preventable disease. Summer may be over, but the damage to skin cells shown by sunburn can remain long after the redness fades."
Her colleague Caroline Cerny, from the charity's "Sunsmart" campaign, highlighted the classic warning signs of melanoma.
She said: "If a mole is as big as a pencil-top eraser, bleeds, is sore or itchy, uneven in colour or has jagged edges, then people should visit their GP without delay."

Three Fifa World Cup officials took bribes

Panorama: Three Fifa World Cup officials took bribes

Fifa executives Ricardo Teixeira (l), Issa Hayatou and Nicolas Leoz (r) Fifa executives Ricardo Teixeira (l), Issa Hayatou and Nicolas Leoz (r)

Three senior Fifa officials who will vote on the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids took bribes in the 1990s, according to the BBC's Panorama.
Nicolas Leoz, Issa Hayatou and Ricardo Teixeira took the money from a sport marketing firm awarded lucrative World Cup rights, the programme alleges.
The alleged bribes are included in a confidential document listing 175 payments totalling about $100m (£64m).
The three men did not respond to Panorama's allegations.
Fifa, world football's governing body, also declined interview requests to address the allegations.
Timing criticised In its programme broadcast on Monday evening, Panorama reported on evidence of a fourth senior Fifa executive's continued involvement in the resale of World Cup tickets to touts.
The BBC has received criticism over the timing of the programme, which comes ahead of Thursday's vote by Fifa's executive committee on who will host the 2018 and 2022 World Cup finals.
England is competing with Russia, Spain/Portugal and Netherlands/Belgium to host the 2018 tournament.
The BBC has defended the timing of Panorama, saying the programme is in the public interest.
But Andy Anson, the head of England's 2018 bid, told the BBC he was "disappointed with the timing" of the programme.
"It is certainly not going to win us any votes so we just have to see what happens tonight and move on," he said.
He added that members of the Fifa executive committee worked closely with each other "and of course if one of them gets hurt the others feel it. That's just life".
In a statement following the Panorama broadcast, England 2018 said the programme was "an embarrassment" to the BBC.
"We stand by our previous position that the BBC's Panorama did nothing more than rake over a series of historical allegations none of which are relevant to the current bidding process. It should be seen as an embarrassment to the BBC.
"The 2018 team are entirely focused on winning the bid for England."

David Mellor chaired the Football Task Force
The alleged bribes to the three members of Fifa's executive committee were paid by sports marketing company International Sport and Leisure (ISL) and date from 1989 to 1999, Panorama reports. The company collapsed in 2001.
Fifa granted ISL exclusive rights to market World Cup tournaments to some of the world's biggest brands and ISL received millions more from negotiating television broadcast rights.
A former account manager at ISL, Roland Buechel, said staff had long suspected bribes were being paid for the lucrative Fifa contracts.
"It is huge money, billions, that can be earned and all the sports marketing companies they fight, they want it," Mr Buechel said.
Some details of the alleged bribes emerged in 2008, when six ISL managers were accused of misusing company money.
Front company One Fifa official - Nicolas Leoz, of Paraguay, the head of South America's football confederation - was named in court papers in connection with payments totalling $130,000 (£83,000).

But Panorama has obtained a confidential ISL document which lists 175 secret payments. It shows Mr Leoz was paid a further $600,000 (£384,000 using current conversions) in three instalments of $200,000.
Mr Leoz did not respond to requests for comment on Panorama's allegations.
The second Fifa official named by the programme, Ricardo Teixeira, is head of the Brazilian Football Confederation which is responsible for staging the 2014 World Cup.
The ISL list shows a front company in Liechtenstein called Sanud received 21 payments totalling $9.5m (£6m).

Mr Teixeira was closely linked to Sanud by an inquiry of the Brazilian senate in 2001. It found that funds from Sanud had been secretly channelled to Mr Teixeira through one of his companies.
Mr Teixeira also did not respond to Panorama's request for comment on the allegations.
The list obtained by Panorama also includes details of 100,000 French Francs (£12,900) paid to Issa Hayatou, the Fifa vice-president representing football in African nations.
Mr Hayatou also did not respond to the allegations when contacted by Panorama.
Fifa president Sepp Blatter said in a statement that the 2008 court case had largely exonerated the former ISL officials.
He said: "It is important to stress that no Fifa officials were accused of any criminal offence in these proceedings."
At the time when ISL are alleged to have been paying the money out, it was not a criminal offence.
The recipients of most of the money paid by ISL into accounts in Liechtenstein cannot be traced.
These latest allegations of wrongdoing by Fifa executive members come after two of the 24 committee members were banned last month from voting in Thursday's ballot.
The bans came after the London-based Sunday Times accused Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii of being willing to sell their World Cup votes.
Call for reform Critics of Fifa say a full investigation is required.
Fifa executive Jack Warner Jack Warner has been a member of the Fifa executive committee since 1983
"I can't help feeling it would be a better role for England to actually be insisting on the reform of Fifa, making Fifa transparent, making Fifa accountable instead of kowtowing to Fifa in order to get the World Cup finals," said David Mellor, the former chairman of the Football Task Force in Tony Blair's government.
The fourth Fifa executive named in the Panorama programme is Trinidad and Tobago's Jack Warner, one of the organisation's vice-presidents.
Panorama says it has seen e-mails and an invoice which show Mr Warner was involved in the procurement of $84,000 worth of 2010 World Cup tickets.
The e-mail trail suggests the tickets were destined for the black market but the planned deal - including 38 tickets for the final in Johannesburg - collapsed because the touts were not prepared to pay the asking price.
In 2006, Panorama revealed that Mr Warner had sold tickets on the black market for that year's World Cup tournament in Germany.
Fifa subsequently ordered Mr Warner's family business, Simpaul Travel, to make a $1m donation to charity to "compensate for the profits it had made through resale of 2006 Fifa World Cup tickets".
At a recent press conference, Mr Blatter was asked about the fresh allegations against Mr Warner by a Norwegian journalist who first broke the story of the e-mails.
Mr Blatter replied: "Should it be knowledgeable to us, by official means, or by official channels, then naturally we would have to look at that."
Fifa's media office, when asked by the Norwegian journalist what Mr Blatter meant by "official channels", reportedly replied: "We have no idea."
England 2018 said the programme was "an embarrassment" to the BBC.
It said in a statement: "We stand by our previous position that the BBC's Panorama did nothing more than rake over a series of historical allegations, none of which are relevant to the current bidding process. It should be seen as an embarrassment to the BBC.
"The 2018 team are entirely focused on winning the bid for England."
Panorama: Fifa's Dirty Secrets was broadcast on BBC One on Monday, 29 November and is now available in the UK on the BBC iPlayer.

And finally, how old is this guy, anyway!?

Coming Home

Does Honesty Help You Stay in a Better Mood?

new from MoodRaiser.com...

Posted: 28 Nov 2010 01:30 AM PST
DOES HONESTY help you have a better mood? In an article on the practical advantages of honesty, I look at the research, and the answer appears to be yes, in the long run. Below are some of the reasons. You can read the whole article here: Deep Honesty. These are some of the ways greater openness and honesty can make you feel good more often:

1. More closeness in relationships. One of the biggest advantages of becoming more honest is that your relationships will be closer. That is, you'll have a greater feeling of connection to the people you're honest with and you'll feel more love for them. John Gottman, a researcher at the University of Washington and the author of The Relationship Cure, found to his surprise that some couples who avoid disagreements stay together. Yes, you read that right. These marriages are "successful" in the sense that they are long-lasting. But Gottman also found they are lonely marriages.

You can avoid conflict by hiding your likes and dislikes, but you forfeit closeness. Part of feeling close to someone is that they know you. And the only way for someone to get to know you is for you to be honest.

It's ironic that the main reason people avoid conflict is because they want to be loved. We pretend to be what we aren't, to like what we don't like, we don't speak up about what we really want or feel. We don't want disagreements. We don't want to be rejected. We don't want to hurt the other person or be hurt by them. We want love.

But love flows through communication. Communication is like a pipeline between two people. The more open we are, the more open the pipeline. And this same pipeline is how love and affection flow from one person to another, so the more open the pipeline, the more love and affection can flow through it.

By hiding parts of themselves, people narrow the pipeline, thus closing off the very thing that they want in their attempt to get it.

Become more open and honest with the people you love, and you open the channel. You'll experience greater love and affection, and that's the best possible thing you can do for your mood.

2. Relationships improve over time. Another thing Gottman discovered about "avoidant couples" (couples who tend to avoid disagreement) is that when they first get married, they were happier than honest couples. They were happier with their marriage.

But three years later, the situation had reversed. The avoidant couples weren't as satisfied with their marriage and more of them had divorced or were headed for divorce. And the more honest, open couples were now happier with their marriages because their marriages had improved.

Honesty helps relationships improve. Honesty allows problems to be solved. You can't solve a problem if you don't really know what it's about! It's like two people trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle when one of you has some pieces in your pocket. It doesn't matter how committed you are or how hard you try, you will never be able to solve that puzzle. Honesty helps relationships improve over time.

3. Higher quality people in your life. Julian Rotter of the University of Connecticut compared the social lives of habitually honest people with the social lives of people who agreed with statements like, "You have to hide your feelings from others," and "You can't afford to be honest." He found that honest people had a tendency to attract trustworthy, truthful, supportive people into their lives. The less honest people tended to attract disloyal, evasive, unreliable people into their lives.

Your honesty literally repels dishonest people away from you and attracts honest people to you. Dishonesty repels honest people and attracts dishonest people into your life.

So simply by becoming more honest, the quality of the people you interact with will improve over time.

4. Better physical health. Researchers have studied this one quite a bit. The leader of the pack is James Pennebaker of Southern Methodist University, author of Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions. The National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health have helped fund his research. Pennebaker found that people who habitually withhold information about themselves, especially about traumatic events, are much more susceptible to contagious diseases than people who are more open and honest.

One qualification you should know about is that you should only reveal your honesty to people you can trust. But given that limitation, honesty improves your immune system. It's good for your physical health, and that's good for your mood.

5. Better mental health. In a survey of 425 psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and marriage and family counselors, almost all of them (96%) thought that becoming more "open, genuine, and honest" was an essential requirement for mental health. Let me point out that they didn't merely think honesty was a good idea. These people, who spend every day working with peoples' real-life problems, are convinced that honesty is essential for mental health. A requirement.

Of course. Think about it. Sanity entails dealing with reality. Honesty is about reality. It's about admitting the truth to yourself and also admitting it to others. Honesty equals sanity. Deceit and pretense are bad for your mental health.

6. Feel better in general. In a study by Santa Clara University in California, researchers found that people who habitually keep secrets, especially about embarrassing or painful experiences, tend to suffer from more colds, more fatigue, and more aches and pains. And they have higher levels of depression and anxiety.

Dishonesty produces unpleasant side-effects. Becoming more honest will make you feel better in general.

7. Suffer less stress. The reason a needle jumps around so much on a lie detector is that lying is stressful. So is pretending, withholding, and misleading. If a person is dishonest with a stranger, the event is only temporarily stressful. But in a close relationship, the deceit needs to be maintained, which causes prolonged stress.

You can't relax and be yourself when you're hiding and pretending.

Often honesty causes conflict, which also causes stress. But greater honesty will lower your stress level in the long run. Problems get solved and you no longer have the ongoing stress of hiding and pretending.

8. Trust. When you're honest, people tend to trust you. I have seen no scientific studies on this, but I'll bet the research will eventually prove it true. People can sense honesty.

And when you're honest, you trust yourself more. It takes a certain amount of discipline to be honest and in the demonstration of your honesty, you learn you can count on yourself. So another side-effect of being honest is that you'll feel better about yourself.

Honesty is the best policy. Not because someone in authority says it is. Not because you might get found out. But because it has practical benefits in your life — benefits that outweigh the costs in the long run by a long shot. Increase your level of honesty and you'll feel great more often.

SICKNESS:
No excuse. We will no longer accept your doctor's

We are no longer allowing this practice. We wish

Other than your own:
This is no excuse for missing work. There is
nothing you can do for them, and we are sure
that someone else can attend to the arrangements.
However, if the funeral can be held in the late
afternoon, we will be glad to allow you to work
through your lunch hour and subsequently let you
leave 1 hour early, provided your share of the
work is ahead enough to keep the job going in
your absence.

DEATH (YOUR OWN):
This will be accepted as an excuse. However, we
require at least two weeks notice as we feel it
is your duty to train your replacement.

ALSO:
Entirely too much time is being spent in the
restroom. In the future, we will follow the
practice of going in alphabetical order. For
instance, those whose names begin with "A" will
go from 8:00-8:15, and so on. If you're unable
to go at your time, it will be necessary to
wait until the next day when your time comes
again.

We appreciate your cooperation,
THE MANAGEMENT
